Earthquake and Social Media

What does an earthquake and social media have to do with each other? Well today a lot. I am sitting in my home office, working, no one else home. And then all 4 of my computer screens started shaking, as well as my windows and desk. I honestly did not realize what was going on for a few seconds, I ran into the bathroom to look at myself in the mirror, to see if I was sick, and I was not. I came back into my office and made my TV louder which CNBC is always on – NOTHING. So then I said, lets look at the “real media” (ok, I did not say this, because I was alone, but I honestly thought it!) I go Facebook 1st and Twitter 2nd, and there it was, NEWS, and news about what just happened 18 seconds ago, there was indeed an earthquake, and it came from Virginia, and it was 5.8 magnitude. All of this info within 20 seconds from the web… About 240 seconds later, that is 4 minutes, CNBC reports on this story, stating the pentagon has been evacuated.
Traditional news is dead, dead I say! The main reason they are dead is no network news can employ millions of journalists, and have them at the scene when news breaks. Social Media empowers anyone and everyone to be a journalist, and if you’re seeing something happen, you’re in the right place.
So to bring this back to my world, not only is traditional media dead, so is traditional marketing, and customer service. Social Media is everywhere, and will help you if you embrace it, and I do believe can hurt you if you dont. Get to the Social MarCom and fast!
Now more than ever, Stay social…

Good stuff Mike and tnkhas for clearing it up. By the way , I am having a heck of a time with our students at Carleton who are totally confused between the 2 disciplines. I just receive a number of term papers and there is definitely a lot of confusion.
